Public bike rental system in Seoul
Seoul Bicycle, also called Dareungi, is a public bicycle rental service operated by the Seoul Metropolitan Government. It was introduced in order to reduce road traffic and greenhouse gas emissions. The number of bicycle users in Seoul increased steadily and the cumulative number of rentals exceeded 90 million as of December 2021. The majority of users were in their 20s and 30s and the usage time throughout the day was concentrated during their commutes.
Impacts of COVID-19 on mobility services
The usage rate of transportation services was largely affected by the coronavirus, which began to spread in Korea from the end of January 2020. In Seoul, the average rate of public transportation declined by an average of 33 percent compared to mid-January due to COVID-19. Additionally, the fear of using public transport led people to use more shared mobility, such as a bike or scooter rental or car sharing.
