From 2013 to 2017, the total number of mobile phone connections in New Zealand has increased steadily, however dropped in 2021 to around 5.9 million connections. Although this statistic also shows a drop in numbers between 2018 and 2019, this was largely due to a change in how one mobile phone operator recorded its subscriber numbers.

The drop in mobile connections in 2019 is due to one operator revising how they measure 6-monthly prepaid subscribers.
Prepay connections for all years are counted as those active in the prior six months.
The New Zealand government's financial year runs from July of one year to June of the following year; for example, financial year 2017 starts on July 1, 2016 and ends on June 30, 2017.
