Main smart speaker use cases in the U.S. 2020

Over 39 percent of American smart speaker owners used their smart speakers daily to listen to a streaming music service as of January 2020. However, the use case which ranked second as ever tried by users was asking questions. 83 percent of the respondents in the United States had used their device for this purpose, whereas listening to streaming music service was tried by five percent more users. Among other popular use cases which were frequently performed by smart speakers were checking the weather, setting an alarm or a times and listening to the radio. Roughly one in four Americans owned some type of smart speaker, regardless of the brand as of 2020.

Smart speakers global market

Forecasts show North America likely to be the second-largest smart speaker market in terms of shipments by 2020, taking up 38 percent of the market. Greater China expected to make up the largest portion of the smart speaker market, accounting for nearly 59 percent of the total shipments worldwide by the end of the year.

Smart speakers with personal intelligent assistant

A virtual personal assistant is a software agent performing tasks and services based on commands assigned by the user. Amazon has been the leading vendor of smart speakers with personal assistants in recent years, despite a noticeable decrease in the market share. As of the most recent quarterly data, Amazon accounted for around 28 percent of the shipments and was closely followed by Google.
