Number of people displaced by disasters worldwide, by type 2008-2022

Between 2008 and 2022, most of the people displaced by natural disasters were displaced by weather disasters such as floods and storms. In 2022, approximately 42 million people were displaced by these types of disasters, compared to nearly 800,000 by geophysical disasters such as volcanic activity and earthquakes. As climate change intensifies over the coming decades, it is expected that the intensity of weather disasters will increase.
