In 2022/23, the total number of finished consultant episodes (FCEs) in NHS hospitals in England amounted to over 20 million while the number of finished admission episodes (FAEs) or admissions was roughly 16.4 million. In this period, the number of FCA was highest in the age group 75 to 79 years for both men and women. The large disparity between admissions for men and women between the ages of 20 and 44 years indicate that maternity services accounted for a large amount of those FCEs.
