This statistic displays the number of event cinema shows in the Netherlands from 2012 to 2017. Event cinema stands for cinemas who display alternative content, besides newly released movies. This content includes, for example, live as well as pre-recorded concerts, theater performances, sport matches, eSports tournaments and episodes from TV shows. It shows that in this period, the number of event cinema shows increased nearly year on year. Whereas in 2012, there were roughly 570 event cinema shows, by 2017 this had more than tripled, to just under 1,870. The number of event cinema shows peaked in 2016, at 1,917.

Because of digitalization, in addition to movies cinemas and movie theaters are able to show alternative content, such as live opera, ballet, theater plays, sport games, concerts etc. This is known as 'event cinema'.
