Cinema screens distribution by exhibitor in Australia 2023

Event Cinemas, a division of Event Hospitality, is one of Australia’s largest cinema companies, holding just over 22 percent of the market share in terms of screen ownership in 2023.

Australia’s bricks and mortar cinemas

The largest share of cinema screens in Australia, 29 percent, were independently owned in 2023. Of those that were owned by chains, Hoyts had the next largest share after Event. The remaining companies all had a share of ten percent or less. These figures translate to a total of 524 screens for Event Cinemas Australia wide, whereas the company’s nearest competitor, Hoyts, had just 388 screens nationally. There were 706 independently owned cinema screens in Australia in the same year.

Ticket pricing

Both average and maximum cinema ticket prices have remained steady in recent years, with only small year-on-year fluctuations in price. Average ticket prices have risen by only around five Australian dollars since 2007, and the 2020 average cinema ticket price was 15.24 Australian dollars, an increase of around one dollar from the 2020 average. Maximum ticket prices peaked in 2011 at 28.50 Australian dollars, and have gained stability in the years since, fluctuating by only a small amount year-on-year until 2019, when the maximum price fell to 22 Australian dollars per ticket.
