In 2021, about 51.41 million South Koreans were covered by the national health insurance, meaning that basically every one of the more than 51 million Koreans was publicly insured.
The number of insured people was less than 18 million in 1985, which sharply increased to more than 40 million in 1990. Since 2000, the number of people covered by the national health insurance grew steadily and almost matched the total population. In 2000, almost 46 million people were insured out of a population of over 47 million.
