This statistic distributes the share of minors that were admitted into the child protection system in Spain during 2017, by type of protective measure adopted. Nearly half of the minors were still awaiting a resolution of preventive measure assignment from the local authorities and had yet to be allocated their safeguard. In Spain and as of December 2017, 62 percent of the minors under the supervision of the Spanish child protection system were in ex lege custody arrangements.
Percentage distribution of minors admitted into the child protection system in Spain during 2017, by type of protective measure
- Ex lege custody: decision reached by the appropriate authority by which the minor in question is declared in abandonment. By this decision, the child is then given custody through the ministry of Law. In practice, this decision implies the child's custody.
- Custody: decision reached by the appropriate authority by which the state takes responsibility of the child's custody. Unlike ex lege custody, declaration of abandonment is not required by the appropriate authority.
- Under consideration prior to the protective measure: files in the process of analysis prior to passing a protective decision. Those cases that have already been allocated a protective decision are not included under this section, notwithstanding that the case is being under consideration for amendments or cessation.
