Mexico is the country with the highest number of extinct animal species in Latin America and the Caribbean. As of 2023, a total of 29 animal species native to Mexico were classified as extinct, either in the wild or in captivity, according to the IUCN Red List. Brazil ranked second in the region, with 14 extinct animal species. Regarding the number of threatened living species in Latin America – which also includes plants – Ecuador ranks first.
