Total sales of Tesla Model X cars in the Netherlands 2016-2023

Model X car sales reached its peak in 2018 when nearly 3,000 units were sold. The sales volume went down significantly in 2019 when around 470 sales were registered. In 2023, Tesla sold 284 of its Model X cars in the Netherlands. 

The tax effect

The downward trend can be explained by the so-called "Tesla tax" that was implemented by the government in early 2019: electric vehicles with a value of more than 50,000 euros became more expensive to lease, resulting in much higher monthly costs. The tax influenced the sales volume of the Tesla Model S, as well. In 2021, only two Model S cars were sold. Even though the "Tesla-tax" affected sales volumes, the Tesla Model Y and 3 remained in the top ten fully electric passenger cars registered in the Netherlands as of July 2024. The Tesla Model 3 was the leading electric passenger car with nearly 49,500 registrations. 

Netherlands: the highest density of EV charging stations in the world

Charging stations along the road are important for drivers of electric vehicles to be able to charge their cars when traveling. With around 22 charging stations per 100 kilometers of paved road,the Netherlands had the second highest density of electric vehicle chargers in the world. South Korea ranked first with 75.2 charging stations per 100 kilometers.
