Asia houses the greatest number of operational petroleum refineries in the world. As of 2021, there were 316 such facilities spread throughout the continent. Asia is also the region with the most refinery expansion projects in the pipeline. Mostly driven by consumer demand of economic powerhouses like China and India, there are nearly 90 refining facilities in the planning stages or under construction.
