The total number of same-sex marriages between women experienced a considerable increase reaching more than 3,600 marriages in 2023. In 2020, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the number of marriages decreased sharply. Marriages between men outnumbered marriages between women in 2005, the year in which the same-sex marriage was legalized in Spain. By 2017, the number of same-sex marriages between men and between women almost reached the same figures.

Spain was the third country in the world to legalize same-sex marriage, which has been legal since 3 July 2005, and was supported by the majority of the Spanish people.
