The revenue generated by e-commerce retailers in Latin America grew nearly 204 percent in 2019, compared to a year earlier. Meanwhile, sales generated by cash & carry retailers registered a growth of 13 percent, followed by drugstores and pharmacies, which grew by 12 percent in comparison to 2018.
Retail e-commerce in Latin America and the Caribbean
Despite representing less than one percent of the retail market value in 2018, retail e-commerce in Latin America and the Caribbean is expected to grow in the upcoming years. According to a survey carried out by Statista, the retail e-commerce sales of physical goods are expected to generate over 88 billion U.S. dollars by 2024, being electronics and media the category accounting for the largest portion of the revenue.
Main players in the e-commerce market in Latin America and the Caribbean
Brazil and Mexico are among the countries with the highest retail e-commerce penetration rate. By 2020, it was forecast that Brazil would account for almost one third of the e-commerce market the region, followed by Mexico, with nearly 29 percent of the distribution. Meanwhile, MercadoLibre, and Falabella are some of the biggest e-commerce retailers in Latin America. Together, both companies generated a revenue of nearly one billion U.S dollars in the last quarter of 2019.
