Millennials are actively observed by the media and public alike, and also surveyed on various topics. In this case the survey at hand examined what German millennials could do without for a month, sex or their smartphone. Ultimately the data discloses smartphone dependence levels among certain age groups of the German population. Encouragingly so, the majority of respondents could exist without their smartphone for a month.
Millennial habits
In general millennials are placed within the age group 18 to 35 years old. There were slightly more male millennials in Germany than female ones. Also more millennials are single than married. Millennials across the world are considered to be a digitally savvy generation. This is exemplified both in data documenting their frequency of using social media and how often they use the internet. While the majority of millennials would not give up sex for a month to be able to use their smartphone, as far as breakfast is concerned, almost half would rather not eat in the morning.
All respondents were born between 1981 and 1998 and are therefore considered millennials and digital natives.
In January 2017 the study “EgoTech” was conducted among roughly 1,000 respondents of the target group millennials (18 to 35 years old) by the successful full service agency for digital marketing and sales solutions SYZYGY. First respondents had to take a psychological online test to allow a classification of their personal narcissism. According to this classification, the survey among the so-called natives about various topics such as digital technologies, social media and usage of apps took place. The result is a broad profile of data regarding millennial attitudes, interests and consumer behavior. Additionally the connection between the degree of narcissism and usage of digital technologies is established. For comparison 1,000 older Germans who are not part of the millennials generation, but of the so called Generation X, born in 1965-1980, or the Generation Baby-Boomers, born in 1945-45, were interviewed. These respondents are considered digital immigrants.
