As of 2018, the government collected approximately 2.1 billion euros of tax on new motor vehicles (passenger cars, motorcycles and delivery vans) in the Netherlands, which is an increase compared to the previous years and a registered growth of 27 percent. Furthermore, it is the highest tax income in the given time period, leading towards a shift in buying used cars instead of new ones.
This private tax (In Dutch called BPM) is an indirect tax that needs to be paid on every registered new passenger cars, motorcycles or delivery vans (although other rules apply to delivery vans). It also counts for individuals who brought a new motor vehicle to the Netherlands from abroad. This tax is calculated over the CO2 emission in gr/km, or over the net list price.
