This statistic illustrates the average private tax (BPM) on new passenger cars, motorcycles and delivery vans in the Netherlands from 2012 to 2018. This private tax (In Dutch called BPM) is an indirect tax that needs to be paid on every registered new passenger cars, motorcycles or delivery vans (although other rules apply to delivery vans). It also counts for individuals who brought a new motor vehicle to the Netherlands from abroad. This tax is calculated over the CO2 emission in gr/km, or over the net list price.
As of 2018, the average that needs to be paid for a new petrol or diesel motor vehicle was approximately 4,800 euros, an increase compared to the previous years. Petrol cars saw a tax growth of 56.4 percent in the given time period, whereas diesel cars had a growth of 82.7 percent. The source mentioned that because of the recent growth in tax on new vehicles, people are buying more often used cars from the Netherlands or abroad.
