The number of dogs and cats rescued in Spain decreased steadily over the period of time under consideration, ranging from 156.8 thousand in 2008 down to 138.4 thousand dogs and cats in 2018. In 2019, however, there was a sharp increase in the number of stray pets, with over 306,000 registered throughout that year. By 2023, this figures has fallen to 286,680.
