In 2018 water transport was the main mode of transport for goods traded internationally with Italy, accounting for about 52 percent of the trade volume. In particular, a quarter of the trade volume was transported via liquid bulk carriers, which was roughly double the figure for container vessels. Road transport accounted for 27 percent of the volume, while rail freight transport made up about 12 percent of the total.
