The share of individuals resorting to hospital services in Italy fluctuated considerably between 2007 and 2019. In 2018, more than 38 percent of the respondents to a survey reported having resorted to hospital services during the year preceding the interview, the highest value in the period under consideration. In 2019, 23.2 percent of respondents received care in hospitals for a minor health problem and 5.7 percent of them were hospitalized and/or underwent surgery for a major disease.

*The sample of people interviewed was representative of the Italian population. The number of respondents changed year by year. Overall, it amounted to roughly 4,000 respondents per year.
