Santiago, Chile's capital and largest city, was considered the smartest city in Latin America in 2019. That year, the city achieved an overall score of 59.45 points. Buenos Aires, the capital city of Argentina, ranked second, with 54.71 score points. Meanwhile, the Dominican Republic's Santo Domingo was the highest ranking Caribbean city, with a 40.39 score.
Leading smart cities in Latin America in 2019, based on index score
The ranking evaluates nine dimensions, through over 100 indicators: human capital, social cohesion, economy, governance, environment, mobility and transport, urban planning, technology, and international projection. In 2020, 174 cities in 80 countries were evaluated. The index score ranges from 0 to 100, with 100 being the best possible score.
