5G connections in Latin America are expected to increase from 0.3 million in 2020 to 61.9 million in 2025. They are anticipated to account for 13 percent of the region’s mobile subscriptions by this time, while LTE (4G) is still predicted to be the most common in Latin America, awaited to make up 68 percent of the region’s mobile subscriptions.
Mobile internet quality
Across the entire Latin American and Caribbean region, Barbados was found to have the highest consistent quality of mobile internet connections in 2019, with over 75 percent of them having been considered strong enough for demanding tasks, such as HD group video calling. This applied to 67.2 percent of Uruguay’s connections, making them the strongest within Latin America. Subsequently, Uruguay was found to provide users with the best mobile video streaming and real-time multiplayer mobile gaming experiences throughout all of Latin America.
Gaming on the go
A survey found 21 percent of internet users among the Latin American population identified themselves as mobile-only gamers. A year later, respondents to a different survey in the region stated they spent one hour or more a day playing mobile games. Such gaming sessions are generating an increasing amount of revenue for the mobile gaming industry as can be seen in Peru. Here, annual revenue are expected to reach 117 million U.S. dollars by 2023, which would be an increase of over 224 percent since 2018.
