2019 saw 334 million Australian dollars spent on the production of domestic television drama and 299 million Australian dollars spent on the production of feature films. Notably, 95 million Australian dollars were spent on producing domestic children’s television drama, and 40 million on online drama.
Sources of funding
The bulk of funding for both television and online drama came from Australian broadcasters and distributors in the same year, totaling just under 200 million Australian dollars. The other largest source of funding was from production companies and producers, in conjunction with other broadcasters and distributors. Notably, the government agency Screen Australia also contributed just under 40 million Australian dollars to productions.
The Australian cinema market
Australian cinemas enjoy stable year-on-year numbers of cinema-goers. This can be attributed in part to the dominance of independently owned cinema screens; the share of screens that aren’t owned by companies is significantly higher than corporate-owned facilities. Moreover, the year-on-year growth in cinema ticket prices (942136) has been nominal, keeping a visit to see a film relatively affordable for cinephiles.
