Pharmacy revenue in Italy 2021, by segment

In 2021, the total revenue generated by pharmacies amounted to 25.2 billion euros. According to the data provided by New Line Ricerche di Mercato, the revenue coming from the sales of prescription drugs added up to 13.9 billion euros, while the segment of commercial products such as non-prescription drugs and OTC made up for the remaining revenue. Regarding the non-prescription segment, self-medication products accounted for 55 percent of the total revenue, whereas dermo-cosmetic products represented 15.8 percent of it.

In terms of market volume, self-medication products accounted for over 46 percent of the non-prescription segment, whereas healthcare items and dermo-cosmetic products represented roughly 26 percent and 13 percent of it, respectively.  

Dermo-cosmetics: new brands and line extensions 

The market of dermo-cosmetic products was a quite innovative one. Suffice to say that in 2021, new brands and line extensions accounted for 13 percent of dermo-cosmetics revenue. Among the subcategories, perfumes were the products generating the largest share of revenue from new brands and line extensions.
