The majority of Japanese surveyed in 2019 reported to still be undecided about what to give their partner or spouse for Christmas. Clothing was the most popular item for gift giving among lovers, while only about 0.4 percent were planning on buying cosmetics for their significant other.
In contrast to Western traditions, Christmas in Japan is often celebrated with friends or in private between romantic partners, similar to New Year's Eve in North American or European countries. Rather a time to socialize and attend parties, Japanese Christmas celebrations have little to do with family gatherings or religious traditions.
