The number of university libraries in operation in Peru has decreased enormously in the past decade. In 2011, more than 1,600 higher education libraries were registered, but the number dropped by half only two years later. In 2017, there were only 44 university libraries in operation in the South American country, most of them located in the country's capital, Lima.
