Number of smart speaker users in China 2017-2020
The number of smart speaker users in China has grown in leaps and bounds since 2017 with estimates for 2019 figuring over 100 million users. These smart speaker users accounted for 11 percent of China’s total internet user population.
Domestic trends
According to a 2019 survey, significant number of inhabitants of China claim to prioritize the sound quality over the price when choosing to purchase a smart speaker. Installing these devices in the living room or bedroom of one’s home has also become common practice. As of 2017, smart speakers manufacturers originating in China had a relatively low number of shipments worldwide. However, the shipment size was expected to increase to nearly 29 million units by 2019.
Consumer attitudes
In a survey gauging customer preferences regarding the price of audio electronics, over 30 percent of respondents agreed to that they are willing to pay more for a brand they trust. Yet another factor motivating respondents to pay a higher price was the high-end technology of such devices. Moreover, users were also found to be particular about the voice over assistant supported on smart speakers, with many of them ranking the Xiao AI by Xiaomi as the most satisfactory.
