With an enterprise value of almost 12.5 billion U.S. dollars, the 2015 Sanofi Animal Health (Merial)/Boehringer Ingelheim merger, was considered the top animal health merger between 2014 and 2018.

The global animal health market has grown considerably over the past decade and a half: in 2018, the market had an estimated value of 33.5 billion U.S. dollars. The industry value has almost tripled since 2002. Additionally, the market’s yearly revenue growth rate stood at six percent in 2018, which was a slight increase compared to one year earlier.

Top animal health companies

With a revenue of just under six billion U.S. dollars, Zoetis was 2018’s leading animal health company. Other leaders that year, included Boehringer Ingelheim Animal Health and Elanco. Zoetis is a subsidiary of Pfizer and earns most of its revenue through its livestock and companion animal (or pets) segments. In 2018, the livestock and companion animal segments each generated about 3.2 and 2.6 billion U.S. dollars, respectively.
