On average, the global power sector produced 481 grams of carbon dioxide per kilowatt-hour (gCO₂/kWh) of electricity generated in 2023. Carbon intensities vary greatly around the world due to the range of energy sources used. For example, India's power sector, which is primarily fueled by coal, produced 713 gCO₂/kWh that year. In comparison, Norway's power sector, which derives about 90 percent of its electricity from hydropower, had a carbon intensity of just 30 gCO₂/kWh.
