Maximum ticket prices in movie theaters Australia 2007-2019
Maximum and average ticket prices
Following a peak in the average maximum ticket price of 28.5 Australian dollars in 2011, prices gained some stability in the following years, fluctuating by only a small amount until 2019. Average ticket prices have enjoyed greater stability and have grown by a small amount year on year, reaching 14.5 Australian dollars in 2019, an all-time high. Previously, the only fluctuation was from 2017 to 2018, where prices dropped by less than one Australian dollar. Growth from 2007 to 2019 amounts to around four Australian dollars in total.
Cinema attendance and ownership
Since 2013, cinema attendance has fluctuated around the 70 percent mark. This steady attendance could be considered a contributing factor to maintaining average ticket prices; operators would otherwise need to raise prices to compensate for poor attendance in the preceding year. Moreover, the dominance of independently owned cinema screens over chain cinemas can also be considered a factor; in 2019, there were 726 independent cinema screens in Australia, which translates to a 31 percent market share. By comparison, the country’s largest chain, Event Cinemas, had a market share in the same year of 24 percent.
