Antiretroviral medications are used for restricting the development of a targeted virus in order to treat viral infections. It is a treatment widely used in the management of HIV/AIDS. In the case of pregnant women, it helps decrease the risk of the new born contracting the infection. In 2019, an estimated 12 thousand pregnant women living with HIV were treated with antiretroviral drugs in Brazil. In that year, more than 600 patients with HIV were on ART in the South American country.
