Share of people reading newspapers daily in the Netherlands 2013-2024
Newspaper readership, be it physically or digitally, fluctuated in the Netherlands since 2017 after a steady decline in previous years. This according to annual survey results which asked consumers whether they read news each day (or close to every day) or not. In 2013, over 65 percent of survey participants indicated that they read either paper or digital newspapers daily or almost daily, whereas by 2020 this figure had decreased to 42 percent. After climbing back to 48 percent in 2022, the share of daily newspapers in the Netherlands sank to 43 percent again in 2023. Similarly, in 2024, the share of reading newspapers daily in the Netherlands decreased notably to 41 percent.
