Despite an increase between 2019 and 2020, the overall trend was a decrease of the share of smokers in France in the past two decades: 30 percent of the respondents were daily smokers in 2000, compared to 25.3 percent in 2021.

Data come from the 2021 Health Barometer of the national public health agency, Santé publique France, a telephone survey with random sampling conducted between February and December among 24,514 adults aged 18-85 living in metropolitan France.
