The Asia-Pacific region has consistently had the highest metro ridership worldwide since 2012. In 2020, the annual metro passenger numbers in the region totaled over 20 billion. The ridership numbers that year were heavily impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic and in 2019 passenger numbers had still stood at over 30 billion.
