Revenue of the leading chemical companies in the United Kingdom (UK) FY2023
Johnson Matthey was by far the largest chemical company in the UK in 2023, with a revenue of approximately 11.9 billion British pounds. The British specialty chemicals company can trace its origins back to 1817 and has since become a multinational corportion with a workforce of roughly 11,690 people.
European chemical industry country comparisons
Of the total chemical revenue in the EU, the UK accounted for a 6.1 percent share in 2018. This was only slightly less than the Netherlands and Italy. However, this was a far smaller share when compared to Germany, which contributed 28.6 percent of the total revenue of the European chemical industry in 2018.
Brexit concerns for the UK chemical industry
With the uncertainty surrounding Brexit, there have been claims that the chemicals industry could lose access to an export market worth nearly 20 billion British pounds. According to a 2018 survey, 80 percent of respondents reported that they were concerned about the impact of Brexit on the chemical industry.
