U.S. market for cannabis 2018, by state

With a value of over five and a half billion U.S. dollars, the state with the largest market for legal and illicit cannabis was California in 2018. New York’s cannabis market was the second-largest, with approximately half of California’s market value.

Marijuana use and sales in the US

Over the last decade, the number of Americans who have used marijuana at least once in their life has increased with each consecutive year. Since 2009, the number has grown by approximately 20 million. Legal cannabis sales have likewise grown and are set to keep doing so in the coming years. Between 2018 and 2025, sales of legal cannabis are projected to grow from about ten billion to almost 25 billion U.S. dollars.

Cannabis and corona

In California, Washington state, and Colorado, recreational cannabis sales surged in the midst of the coronavirus outbreak. On March 16, 2020, marijuana sales increased by over 150 percent in California, while growing by about 100 percent in Washington state.
