Outward flows of FDI in Russia 2011-2022

Outward foreign direct investment (FDI), which in simplified terms measures the value of domestic companies investing in foreign countries, has seen fluctuant dynamics over the observed period. The highest mark over the given timeframe was recorded in 2013 at 70.69 billion U.S. dollars and the lowest in 2020 at 6.78 billion U.S. dollars. In 2022, the figures were measured at 11.5 billion U.S. dolars

Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) in Russia

The total value of FDI  in Russia dropped by roughly 10 percent, measuring at nearly 189 billion U.S. dollars in 2021. As for the inward FDI stock, which is the net value of a direct investment in an economy – namely, the sum of foreign investors’ equity and the total value of loans received by the resident companies in that economy – demonstrated fluctuant trend, decreasing to 379 billion U.S. dollars in 2022.

Global overview

From a global perspective, the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic had a significant effect on the FDI market worldwide. Namely both global FDI inflows and outflows decreased in 2020 compared to 2019. The former experienced over a 30 percent drop, while the latter saw a roughly 40 percent reduction year-over-year. While the United States and Japan were the two leading countries by FDI outflows in 2022, China took the leading position in 2020, reporting nearly 154 billion U.S. dollars in FDI outflows that year.
