Quarterly tourism expenditure by foreign travelers in Japan 2015-2024

In the first quarter of 2024, around 1.75 trillion Japanese yen were expended by foreign travelers visiting Japan. Following the reduced travel activities due to the global corona (COVID-19) outbreak, tourism expenditures by international visitors to Japan declined significantly and remained low throughout the pandemic but recovered by the first quarter of 2023.

*Due to the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on travelling, the survey was not conducted in Q2, Q3, and Q4 of 2020.
** The survey was cancelled during Q1, Q2, Q3 of 2021. A tentative figure for the entire year was gained by multiplying the per capita spending of travelers during Q4 with the recorded international traveler numbers for the entire year (gained from a different report).

Data prior to Q1 2024 come from previous reports.
100 Japanese yen equal 0.64 U.S. dollars or 0.59 euros as of June 2024.
