China is by far the leading employer of people working within the oil and gas industry. In 2021, China boasted an estimated oil and gas workforce of 86 million people strong. Between 2019 and 2021, employment within the industry decreased in most countries, particularly in China where many work in the refining sector. China has the second largest refining capacity of any country worldwide following the United States.
