Growth rate of generic drugs market volume in Italy 2017-2022, by quarter
The market volume of generic drugs sold by pharmacies in Italy increased steadily from the fourth quarter of 2017 to the third quarter of 2019. The most remarkable growth was registered in the second quarter of 2018, when generic drugs' market volume increased by nearly six percent compared to the same period of the previous year. Over the course of 2020, however, the market volume of generics experienced a prolonged contraction, until the second quarter of 2021 when it started to grow again. The sharpest decline was recorded during the second quarter of 2020, when the volume of generics sold decreased by nine percent compared to the second quarter of 2019. This period corresponded with the national lockdown imposed by the government to contain the spread of COVID-19.
