This statistic shows the number of new policy interventions implemented worldwide that were discriminatory towards the steel industries of other countries from 2009 to 2017. In 2017, there were 54 new protectionist policies related to the steel industry put in place, an increase from the 13 policies implemented in 2010.

According to the source: "Totals presented here relate to the number of measures documented by 31 December of the year in question. Other than 2018, this neutralises differences across years in the time to identify and document liberalising and protectionist measures. Therefore, 2018 data is likely understated and has therefore been left off the graph for clarity."

Protectionist is based on what the source labels as a discriminatory measure. When a measure is discriminatory it goes against the notion of global free trade by favoring producers in the domestic market.
