The transformation of Qatar’s economy
Since its complete independence from Britain in 1971, Qatar has been one of the world’s most important producers of oil and gas. Before that, it was a British protectorate known for pearling. Aiming towards a diversified economy, the country has witnessed increasing investments in non-energy sectors. The share of oil rents in the GDP of Qatar in 2017 reached half the share of 2010.
