In Sweden, voter turnout has traditionally been high. Since the 1970s, when a unicameral parliament was introduced in the country, the voter rate has never been lower than 80 percent. There was a gradual decrease in the turnout from 1982 to 2002, but has since increased, reaching 87.2 percent in the 2018 election, before falling slightly in 2022. In recent years, this was one of the highest voter turnouts worldwide.

Swedish Parliament (Riksdag) elections are held every four years in Sweden. A proportional election system is being used, the amount of mandates is distributed accordingly to the share of votes received by a party. The prospective members are selected by their party. In order to win seats in the Riksdag, a party must win at least four percent of the vote nationally. The unicameral Parliament of Sweden has 349 members.
