During fiscal year 2017, Indians who smoked cigarettes spent an average expense of approximately 1,200 Indian rupees on it and those who preferred bidi spent approximately 285 rupees a month on it.
In order to discourage people from smoking, the Central Government, through its Union Budget, had proposed to increase the taxes levied on tobacco products from fiscal year 2020.
