The man behind the business - Dhirubhai Ambani

Dhirubhai Ambani started his career as a clerk at A. Besse and Company where he learnt about trading, accounting and other business skills. With that knowledge, Ambani began a trading business with commodities under the name Reliance Commercial Corporation. The business saw a rapid growth owing to high quality products and less profit margin than his competitors. After attaining the desired success in his trading business, Ambani started his first Reliance textile mill in 1966 through an idea with backward integration.

Gradually, he molded Reliance into a petrochemicals behemoth and kept adding new segments of businesses including plastics, power generation, retail, and telecommunications through a policy of backward integration and diversification. Currently, Reliance Industries is one of the largest privately owned corporation in the country and employs over five million people. Its biggest earner is the petroleum refining and marketing segment, with other businesses – specifically retail and digital services catching up.
