In 2022, the value of men's apparel sales at department stores in Japan amounted to almost 300 billion Japanese yen. This constituted a significant decrease from around 461.4 billion yen in 2013. And while department stores remain an important retail channel, online apparel sales have been increasing continuously in the last years.
Japanese menswear market
Following the United States and China, the Japanese market accounts for the fourth-largest share of the global men’s apparel market. This is constituted by a broad and fashion-forward middle-class society and high apparel sales per capita. With its three most popular fast fashion brands (Uniqlo, Shimamura, GU) being Japanese, Japan maintains a very strong domestic apparel market. Smaller street-side shops, on the other hand, continue to enjoy popularity among consumers, represented in the high density of neighborhood stores.
Fast Retailing for fast-fashion
The retail holding company Fast Retailing Co., Ltd. was founded in 1963 and has been a major player in the Japanese apparel market over the last decades, with its subsidiary fast fashion company Uniqlo accounting for the largest share of Fast Retailing's group sales. Uniqlo enjoys an increasing amount of popularity in Japan as well as abroad and over the past years, it has continuously grown its number of stores in Japan and around the world to establish itself as one of the world’s leading fashion retailers for functional clothing, simultaneously distancing itself from other fashion retail brands such as H&M or Zara.
