As of the last quarter of 2023, Poland was the EU country with the highest ratio of non-performing loans (NLPs) to total gross loans, at nearly 4.3 percent. During the same period, the ratio of non-performing loans in Sweden amounted to just 0.3 percent. Non-performing loans are those that are in default, or are close to being in default. Many standard contract terms specify that loans become non-performing after being in default for 90 days, but this can vary.

While non-performing loans (NPL) are defined as such when they are 90 days past due, non-performing exposure (NPE) refers to exposure to borrowers that are unlikely to pay their obligations or that have payments 90 days past their due.
