This statistic shows the results of a survey conducted to establish the average value of transactions at the point of sale (POS) in Euro area countries in 2016. As can be seen, in all Euro area countries cash was used for smaller valued transactions. Other payment instruments including checks, direct debits and credit transfers in Ireland amounted to an average transaction value at the point of sale (POS) of 390 euros in 2016.

This statistic has been created using three separate graphs. * The regular sample excluded Germany and the Netherlands. For these countries, data from the central banks were used.
** The source states that "over two-thirds of interviews were carried out in October, November [2015] and February [2016], which are considered to be fairly average months with respect to POS payments made by consumers."
*** A total of 65,281 respondents participated in the diary survey. The total sample for the euro area – including data from Germany and the Netherlands – is of 92,080 respondents. **** The “other” category includes instruments such as checks, direct debits and credit transfers.
