The number of hospital beds in Bulgaria has increased from around 45,800 in 2010 to nearly 53,500 n 2023. Over the same period, the ratio of residents to physicians decreased. In 2010, there were on average 269 individuals per physician in Bulgaria, though by 2023 this dropped to 215 people per physician. 

Spending on health

Bulgaria’s expenditure on healthcare was estimated at 7.7 percent of GDP in 2023. In comparison to other European countries, Bulgaria ranked rather low by the share of GDP spent on health spending; however, its figure was above several other Central and Eastern European (CEE) countries, such as Croatia, Estonia, Lithuania, Poland, Hungary, and Romania. To compare, Switzerland had the highest share of expenditure on health, with 12 percent of its GDP.
