Appeals of football in England 2018
Success is the single most common thing that makes football appealing to most of the English respondents: Winning is what makes football exciting for 34 percent of respondents in England. Team spirit, thrill, and celebration of victories are some of the other popular appeals of football among English football fans.
Is VAR making Premier League less exciting?
Video Assistant Referee (VAR) was introduced in the English Premier League at the start of 2019/20 campaign. This technology was also used in FIFA 2018 World Cup in Russia in order to assist referees and mitigate officiating errors on the pitch. However, it has caused quite an uproar among fans of the Premier League.
VAR overturned goal decisions and flagged players offside with the slightest of margins which, for some, has taken away the real excitement of football. In 2020, a considerable share of adult British respondents, who watch Premier League, are of this viewpoint as they think that the introduction of VAR has made Premier League matches a little less enjoyable to watch on a regular basis. This sentiment is shared by both male and female fans of the Premier League who, in that same year, were surveyed about the influence of VAR in the top tier of English football.
